We
declared our support for Momentss. Their album is the perfect audio
accompaniment to modern-day South Africa, a country as beautiful as it is
fraught: with corruption; with rising levels of poverty; with a state which has
developed hostile tactics to silence its critics (like last week’s
parliamentary fracas). Our adoration for the live collective reached peak level
earlier today upon discovering that they’d put their entire project up for free
download. Their first single was released earlier this week. Titled “The Vibe”,
it’s a much-needed piece of social commentary partly directed at draconian tactics
inflicted upon the larger public by some sectors of the South African
government. Slogans such as “shoot to kill!” – referencing former national
police commissioner Bheki Cele’s pronouncements in 2009 that “police must shoot
to kill [and] worry later” – and questions about the whereabouts of taxes
related to the debacle surrounding President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead
automatically set Momentss.
